Earth Science Seminar Series

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Earth Science Seminar Series for spring 2008 is under way.

Dr. Joe Hupy, assistant professor of geography and anthropology, will present "Assessing Landscape Disturbance and Recovery across a WWI Battlefield: Verdun, France," at 4 p.m. Feb. 8 in Room 281 of Phillips Science Hall.

Talks will continue throughout the semester. Unless otherwise noted, sessions will begin at 4 p.m. in Room 281 of Phillips Science Hall. The talks are free and open to the community.

Following is the tentative schedule for upcoming talks:

  • Feb. 22: Dr. Geoffrey Pignotta, assistant professor of geology, will present "Magma Chamber Construction and Evolution in the Sierra Nevada Batholith: Constraints from the Jackass Lakes Pluton."
  • Feb. 29: Kate MacLaurin, UW-Eau Claire alumna, department of Earth Sciences, Simon Fraser University, will speak on "A Preliminary Assessment of the Sedimentology and Stratigraphy of the Lower Crustaceous Jackass Mountain Group, Chilko Lake area, British Columbia."
  • March 7: Ben Gulluzzo, department of mathematics, University of Iowa, will speak on "Hydrogeological Modeling."
  • March 27: Matthew C. Nisbett, of the American University School of Communication, will present "Consensus and Conflict in Communicating about Science" at 7 p.m. in Room 007 of Phillips Science Hall.
  • April 4: Randall Schaetzl, of the Michigan State University department of geography, will present "Geographic Studies on Loess in the Upper Midwest: New Findings and Potentials."
  • April 25: To be announced
  • May 2: Doug Hallum, Nebraska Department of Natural Resources hydrogeologist, will present "Streamed Elevation Uncertainty and Implications for Modeling Stream Baseflow."
  • May 9: Rob Nurre, of the Wisconsin Board of Commissioners of Public Land, will present "The Surly Surveyor."
