Management 340 Students Highlight
Student Health Service

RELEASED: Dec. 22, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — For many college students strapped for cash, finding affordable health care can be a challenge.

That is why University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students in a fall organizational behavior class decided to explore for students who are in need of health care. Junior Melanie Gullerud, Eau Claire, and her classmates collaborated with the UW-Eau Claire Student Health Service to compare their prices with local urgent care clinics and emergency rooms.

"We want to get the word out to students that SHS is a very convenient choice and less expensive than going to the hospital," Gullerud said.

The students made a detailed chart highlighting various services they thought college students would find of particular interest including vaccines, mono tests and affordable birth control. They then created an online chart and made fliers to hang in Davies Center and to give to resident assistants in the residence halls. The goal, Gullerud said, was to get the word out about the SHS services.

"I'm a junior, and I still didn't even know about most of the services," Gullerud said.

Student Heath Service is available to all full- and part-time students at UW-Eau Claire. The clinic, located in Crest Wellness Center on upper campus, provides a variety of services, including physicals, vaccines and strep tests, and provides medication at affordable prices. For example students can get a sports, employment or travel physical for $5 or $10, much less than the cost elsewhere, Gullerud said.

"I can just go here on campus and get a shot," Gullerud said. "You can save a lot of money going to Student Health Services."

To see the list of available services, visit the Student Health Service Web site and click on the "Compare Student Health Service Prices." To make an appointment, students can call 715-836-4311. Student Health Service is open from 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays when classes are in session.
