Media Memo: Student's Project Helps Brighten Holiday for Bloomer Nursing Home Residents

TO: News/Assignment Editors and Directors

FROM: Judy Berthiaume, Director

DATE: Dec. 18, 2008

SUBJECT: Student's Project Helps Brighten Holiday for Bloomer Nursing Home Residents

A junior art and design major at UW-Eau Claire is helping to make the holidays a little brighter for residents at the Maplewood Nursing Home located within Luther Midelfort Chippewa Valley in Bloomer.

Amanda Bulger has drawn portraits of all 23 residents at the home. Her portraits will be added to the first page of scrapbooks the nursing home staff is giving to each of the residents for Christmas.

Bulger drew the first few portraits while visiting with the residents at the nursing home and using them as models. But because of time constraints, she worked on the others using photographs of the residents.

As an art major, Bulger said she always enjoys drawing. But working on the portraits for the nursing home residents was rewarding in a whole new way, she said.

"It is gratifying to know that I helped bring Christmas cheer to these honored and yet often overlooked members of society, as well as to their families who will have the scrapbook and portrait to hold on to when their loved one is gone," Bulger said of her project.

Amanda Bulger is available to talk about her project but is leaving Eau Claire for the holidays on Friday evening. You can reach her at 715-851-0339 or bulgeraj@uwec.edu.
