EAU CLAIRE — Heather Johnson Schmitz is the new grants coordinator in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Johnson Schmitz came to UW-Eau Claire with a background in technical and grant writing for small and mid-sized companies throughout Wisconsin. She most recently worked as the communications director for a medical software company in Green Bay. As a UW-Eau Claire graduate and an Eau Claire native, Johnson Schmitz has many ties to the campus and community.

As grants coordinator, Johnson Schmitz will be the primary contact for all UW System proposals and will assist with submission of extramural grant proposals. She also will help faculty and academic staff with funding searches and develop a variety of campuswide communications regarding funding options and ORSP services.

The grants coordinator position resulted from recommendations of an external review and assessment of ORSP's responsibilities and resources.

"We are delighted that Heather has joined the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs," said Roger Wareham, director of grants and contracts. "She brings with her a variety of experiences that will allow us to more fully enhance and expand services to the campus, furthering research opportunities."

UW-Eau Claire was designated as the Center of Excellence for Faculty and Undergraduate Student Research Collaboration by UW System. ORSP's mission is to serve faculty, academic staff and students in the pursuit of research, scholarly and creative endeavors. ORSP coordinates and administers internally funded research and professional development programs, directs the Center of Excellence for Faculty and Undergraduate Student Research Collaboration, and facilitates proposal preparation and submission to extramural agencies.

ORSP provides assistance at all steps in the funding process, from finding opportunities to coordinating the administrative review process to submitting a proposal.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to contact ORSP early in their funding process to receive comprehensive support.
