Media Memo: Professor Writes Santa Book with Environmental Message

TO: News/Assignment Editors and Directors

FROM: Judy Berthiaume, News Bureau

DATE: Dec. 5, 2008

SUBJECT: Professor Writes Santa Book with Environmental Message

A children's Christmas book with an environmentally friendly message that was written by a UW-Eau Claire faculty member and an Eau Claire entrepreneur will be on sale during the university's Holiday Concert this weekend. Concerts will begin at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, in Zorn Arena.

Li-Ying Bao, an associate professor of art & design, and Eau Claire entrepreneur Michael Webb wrote "Riding with Santa." UW-Eau Claire foreign language department and art & design students and alumni helped with the language translations and illustrations in the book.

The book tells the story of how Santa, while flying over the earth, sees some surprising changes in the landscape. Santa meets children who share his concern about melting icebergs and smoggy cities. Together they decide to make changes to help solve the environmental problems.

In addition to being sold at Sunday's Holiday Concert, "Riding with Santa" will be on sale the week of Dec. 8 in Davies Center and is available online.

For each book sold, $10 will be donated to UW-Eau Claire's Campus Sustainability Initiatives Fund, which supports sustainability efforts being developed on campus.

The book is available in English, Chinese, German and Spanish.

For more information about the book, contact Li-Ying Bao at 715-836-4631 or baol@uwec.edu or Michael Webb at rmwebb@a3animation.com.
