Musical Story 'Once' to Screen at UW-Eau Claire Dec. 11-14

RELEASED: Dec. 3, 2008

poster for OnceEAU CLAIRE — "Once" (2006), a modern-day musical set on the streets of Dublin, will screen Dec. 11-14 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Winner of the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Original Song ("Falling Slowly"), the film will be presented at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

A Dublin busker (Glen Hansard) who makes a living playing guitar and repairing vacuum cleaners meets a young Czech immigrant (Marketa Irglova) who sells roses on the same street. She likes his song and, she has a broken vacuum cleaner. They soon find themselves playing music together and over the course of a week they form a musical rapport and, newly inspired, decide to record an album.

"'Once' makes us believe that this is all happening right in front of our eyes," wrote Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times. "We fall for each of these young people at the precise moment they are falling for each other, and what could be better than that?"

"'Once' was shot for next to nothing in 17 days, doesn't even give names to its characters, is mostly music with not a lot of dialog, and is magical from beginning to end," wrote film critic Roger Ebert. "It's one of those films where you hold your breath, hoping it knows how good it is, and doesn't take a wrong turn. It doesn't."

Directed by John Carney, the 85-minute film is rated R.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the Service Center in Davies Center's east lobby (715-836-3727) and will be sold at the door.
