EAU CLAIRE — Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Derek James will play three free concerts at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Dec. 5-6. His shows in The Cabin, the Davies Center coffeehouse that is celebrating its 40th anniversary season, will begin Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., and Saturday at 8 p.m.

There are few places James hasn't been. After performing live for the first time in Australia, James found himself making his way through the streets and clubs of Southern France with a band of French musicians in tow, playing the catchy original compositions that were constantly bouncing around in his head. His music encompasses his experiences, and his experiences have been anything but ordinary. He won recognition in 2005 as a finalist in the Williamsburg Singer/Songwriter Competition.

Godfrey Diamond (Aerosmith, Lou Reed) and drummer Nir Z (John Mayer, Genesis) also saw James' ability and passion and lent their skills on "Stray" (2005), James' debut album.

James now makes his local rounds at New York's premier venues, including Pianos, Arlene's Grocery and The Knitting Factory. With a consistently growing buzz and crowds growing with every show, he's able to prosper from his first love: music.

Cabin performances are free and open to all ages. Soft drinks, domestic and imported beer, specialty coffee drinks and tea are sold at all evening programs. Proof of age is required for alcohol purchases.

All performances are produced and managed completely by student members of The Cabin committee of the Student Senate's University Activities Commission. For a complete schedule of the semester's Cabin presentations, contact the Activities and Programs office, 715-836-4833, or visit the Cabin Web site.
