UW-Eau Claire Workshops to Explore Business Legal Issues

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Small Business Development Center and office of Continuing Education will offer four business legal issues workshops in Eau Claire during October. Small business owners, managers and human resource professionals may register for one or more of the workshops:

  • "Taxes — How to Deal with Them!" will meet from 8:30 to noon Oct. 7. Learn how to make business decisions such as which form of business ownership to pursue, which accounting methods to employ and when to use depreciation to affect tax liability. The workshop will be facilitated by Lucretia Mattson, seasonal tax manager for Larson Allen LLP, Eau Claire, and UW-Eau Claire professor emerita of accounting and finance.
  • "Personnel Laws — Are You in Compliance?" will meet from 1-4:30 p.m. Oct. 7. Steve Weld, president of the law firm of Weld, Riley, Prenn & Ricci SC in Eau Claire, will lead the session. The workshop will help participants avoid unnecessary litigation by reviewing state and federal personnel laws that affect the workplace.
  • "Collections — Maximize Recovery, Minimize Loss" will meet from 8:30 a.m.-noon Oct. 14. The workshop, facilitated by Chris Seelen, an attorney with Ruder Ware in Eau Claire, will inform participants about what information to collect, how to obtain judgment through small claims court and available post-judgment collection mechanisms.
  • "Contracts — When a Handshake Isn't Enough" will meet from 1-4:30 p.m. Oct. 14. Bill Spangler, an attorney with Weld, Riley, Prenn & Ricci SC, will facilitate the discussion of who has authority to contract and the liability for contracts made by business partners and employees within different business legal structures sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations.

Each half-day workshop fee is $99. A discounted fee of $356 is available for pre-registration for all four workshops by one person. Fees include instruction, course materials, continuing education units and refreshments.

Workshops meet at the Sleep Inn & Suites Conference Center, 5872 33rd Ave., at the intersection of Highway 29 and County Road T in Eau Claire.
