UW-Eau Claire Renovates the Performance Space of The Cabin for Its 40th Season

RELEASED: Aug. 27, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has completely renovated The Cabin, the Davies Center performance space that presents the longest-running coffeehouse series in the nation, in preparation for its 40th anniversary season.

Cosmetically, the space has a new professional-looking performance stage and front-of-house control area. Technical modifications to The Cabin represent a considerable upgrade into the professional production world, including a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system.

The lighting system is the definition of green technology. Utilizing new performance ColorKinitics ColorBlast 12 LED fixtures, the system will reduce power consumption by 95 percent per show, while giving the audience a visually striking view usually only found on a national tour. Students operating the new ETC Smartfade ML lightboard will have experience with the most cutting-edge technology available to the lighting world.

The Cabin's new sound system utilizes a 24-channel GL2400 Allen and Heath console with tuned JBL MRX 500 Series main speakers, an upgrade that will eliminate sound cancellations. A four individual monitor mix was also added, utilizing newly designed compact EAW floor monitors.

The University Centers worked with the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate in designing a venue to serve both as a performance space and a fully functioning sound lab. Student employees and volunteers will be able to train on one of the most professional sound systems in the UW System. Also planned with the idea of going "green" in mind, the new sound design has reduced the overall power consumption in the space by 35 percent.

The Cabin will begin its 40th anniversary season Friday, Sept. 5, with a performance by Minneapolis indie acoustic artist Andy Elwell. For a complete schedule, contact the Activities and Programs office, 715-836-4833, or visit the Cabin Web site.
