SUBJECT: Plan to Minimize Move-in Impact in Clairemont Avenue Construction Zone
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire first-year students will move into residence halls on Thursday, Aug. 28. UW-Eau Claire, the Eau Claire Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation have created a plan to minimize move-in traffic congestion in the Clairemont Avenue construction zone.
First-year students and their families have been assigned a specific time for move-in, which is normal operating procedure. However, this year students and their families moving into several upper campus residence halls are being instructed to use the Hwy. 37/Hendrickson Drive entrance, rather than the University Drive entrance, to upper campus.
In another effort to reduce congestion, special electronic signage will be in place to direct students and families, and the Department of Transportation will have an electrician manually controlling the traffic signal at the intersection of Clairemont Avenue and University Drive.
In addition to the change in traffic routing on upper campus, the Garfield Avenue hill on the UW-Eau Claire campus will be closed to traffic from 7 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, until the evening of Saturday, Aug. 30.
While precautions are being taken to minimize congestion in the Clairemont Ave. construction zone, motorists may want to consider using an alternate route between Patton Street and Craig Road along Clairemont Avenue between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Aug. 28.
Students also will be moving into residence halls on lower campus, so motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving in the State Street construction zone or to consider an alternate route.
For more information about the Department of Transportation role with regard to traffic control during move-in, contact Chris Ouellette, regional communications manager, Wisconsin Department of Transportation Northwest Region, at 715-833-9814. For information about UW-Eau Claire's role, contact Sgt. Chris Kirchman, University Police, at 715-836-2222.
