Media Memo: UW System Board of Regents Approve UW-Eau Claire Initiatives

TO: News and Assignment Editors/Directors

FROM: Mike Rindo

DATE: Aug. 25, 2008

SUBJECT: UW System Board of Regents Approve UW-Eau Claire Initiatives

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approved several UW-Eau Claire program and building initiatives at its Aug. 21-22 meeting:

  • Liberal studies degree/comprehensive major: The regents gave final approval to UW-Eau Claire's new liberal studies degree and comprehensive major. The degree and major offer a more flexible degree for students seeking alternatives to the typical major-minor structure, provide better support for transfer students, facilitate degree completion by nontraditional students, and support residents in the region who need a bachelor's degree for career advancement yet who do not need specific professional preparation.

The new degree and comprehensive major will be offered in fall 2009.
  • Expansion of applied behavioral analysis program: As part of the UW System Growth Agenda for the 2009-11 biennium, the regents approved expansion of applied behavioral analysis (ABA) programs at UW-Eau Claire. Applied behavioral analysts work mainly with people with autism and other developmental disabilities. Wisconsin is currently behind other states with regard to the size and quality of the training programs offered as well as the number of analysts working in the field.

The 2009-11 operating budget approved by the regents would provide UW-Eau Claire with nearly $1 million in additional funding beginning in the 2010-11 academic year to expand both ABA undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Predesign for new academic building: The regents approved the predesign for a new academic building to replace the obsolete Brewer Hall and Campus School complex. The building primarily would house the College of Education and Human Sciences, consolidating programs currently scattered in a number of buildings on campus. The 2009-11 capital budget approved by the regents provides predesign for the building, with $44.5 million in construction enumerated in the 2011-13 biennium.

The regents' approval of expansion of the ABA program and predesign for a new academic building is only the first step in the state budget process and would require approval by the State Building Commission, the legislature's Joint Committee on Finance, the Assembly, the Senate and the Governor.
