UW-Eau Claire's Party House 2008 to Promote Responsible Decision Making with Regard to Alcohol

RELEASED: Aug. 22, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — Party House, an award-winning, interactive campuswide event at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire designed to challenge first-year students' misperceptions about alcohol use, will be held Sept. 4. The program will highlight perceived use, abuse and potential consequences related to alcohol use.

Party House will begin at 6 p.m. in Davies Center, where student volunteers will present an interactive program consisting of a seamless series of short vignettes demonstrating effective and ineffective means of dealing with issues important to all college students: communication, responsibility and respect in the areas of alcohol, drugs and sexual behavior. Groups of about 60 students will enter the initial scene about every five minutes, then divide into smaller groups to participate in the vignettes and finally discuss what they experienced with a student facilitator. They then will attend the resource fair on the Central Campus Mall, which will have information and learning opportunities about the dangers of alcohol abuse and offer other options for campus involvement, relaxation and recreation.

From the resource fair, students will be directed to Zorn Arena, where convocation speaker Mike Green, a nationally recognized leader in drug and alcohol awareness and education, will present "Four Stages of Drinking" at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. During the past 18 years, Green has presented on more than 2,000 college and university campuses. He has been an athletics participant and coach on both the high school and college levels. As a football defensive lineman, he received all-Pennsylvania conference and all-state honors and a tryout with the Philadelphia Eagles. His background as an athlete, coach and educator helps him connect to youth. His firsthand experience as a recovering alcoholic gives him the credibility to honestly relate the dangers drugs and alcohol pose for many students.

UW-Eau Claire offices sponsoring Party House include Advising and New Student Initiatives, Center for Alcohol Studies and Education, First-Year Experience Program, Housing and Residence Life, New Student Orientation, University Centers and athletics. Grant funding from the National Collegiate Athletic Association also supported the event.
