RELEASED: Aug. 22, 2008

student playing in Big Band Era concertEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire department of music and theatre arts will present "A Salute to the Big Bands: Let Freedom Ring," honoring Wisconsin's military veterans, during the annual Big Band Era concert and dance at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, in Zorn Arena.

In recognition of the many dedicated servicemen and women who have served the United States, this year's music will pay tribute to the Big Band Era and America's freedom. Dr. Robert Baca, professor of music and director of jazz studies and of Jazz Ensemble I at UW Eau Claire, will perform on trumpet, and Dr. Jeffrey Crowell, associate professor of music, will direct Jazz Ensemble II and perform on drums. The two award-winning ensembles will provide a historical musical journey of the Big Band Era with both patriotic tunes and great dancing music. Two large dance floors will be provided.

"We will keep your hands clapping, your toes tapping and your fingers snapping," Baca said. "It will be a fun afternoon filled with music and special guests, including dancers, singers and a local bell choir."

Proceeds from "A Salute to the Big Bands" will provide funding for enrichment opportunities for students in the UW-Eau Claire jazz studies program, which has received Down Beat Magazine's "Best College Big Band" award five out of the last eight years along with many individual awards. Jazz Ensemble I has recorded a CD each year for the past decade, with two nominated for Grammy awards. UW-Eau Claire also sustains one of the nation's oldest and largest jazz festivals, which is managed by a large and active International Association of Jazz Educators student chapter.

Tickets for "A Salute to the Big Bands" are $14 for the general public, $10 for seniors 62 and over and for youth 17 and under, $12 for UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff, and $8 for organized groups of 10 or more and UW-Eau Claire and UW System students. There is a special discount of $8 for anyone who has served in the armed forces. The deadline for the discount is Sept. 22. Tickets are now on sale at the University Service Center in Davies Center.
