EAU CLAIRE — Valeria Moullet, the salutatorian at Bloomer High School 72 years ago, wanted to attend the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire but was not able to afford it because of the Great Depression. Today, thanks to her son, Barry, Valeria's dream will be embodied through the successes of future generations of Bloomer High School graduates.

Barry Moullet and his wife, Chris, both Bloomer natives, are endowing the Ray and Valeria Moullet Scholarship through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. The fund will provide an annual award of $6,000 to an outstanding graduate of Bloomer High School who demonstrates financial need but does not qualify for financial assistance through grant eligibility. And, if the student performs well academically during the freshman year, the scholarship may be renewed for an additional $6,000, providing for a $12,000 scholarship over two years. This represents one of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's largest endowed scholarship funds.

"My wife and I established this scholarship in memory of my parents because we thought it was a nice way to give back to the university and to my hometown," Barry Moullet said. "We also wanted to reach out to students who struggle to find ways to afford a higher education, just like my mother did. Both of my parents are deceased, but I think they would be very pleased to see how their legacy will be represented at my alma mater."

Barry Moullet, a 1983 UW-Eau Claire graduate, is currently a senior executive with Darden Restaurants Inc., based in Orlando, Fla. His parents were longtime Bloomer residents and business owners. Ray and Valeria Moullet owned and operated the Bloomer Bakery, which remains in their family, for more than 40 years. Chris and Barry Moullet both have a number of family members in the area.

"My parents gave back to the community in their way and now it is my turn," Barry Moullet said. "Life has been good to me. The university and the Bloomer communities have provided me with lifelong friendships, an exceptional education and wonderful opportunities, so it feels good to be able to give back to both."

Information about applying for the Ray and Valeria Moullet Scholarship will be available through Bloomer High School and the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.
