Child Advocacy Conference to Be Held Oct. 1 in Eau Claire

Child Advocacy photoEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education and Chippewa Valley Child Advocacy Center will sponsor "Child Advocacy: A Call to Action" from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Plaza Hotel & Suites in Eau Claire.

Designed for social workers, law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, guardians ad litem, physicians, nurses, emergency room staff, psychologists and victim witness staff, the one-day conference will present new perspectives in the field of child advocacy and child abuse.

Morning keynote speaker Victor Vieth, director of the National Child Protection Training Center, a program of the National Association to Prevent Sexual Abuse of Children, will present "Unto the Third Generation: A Call to End Child Abuse in 120 Years."

Author and lecturer Norma Ginther, who has more than 20 years of experience in the field of child welfare and is on the staff of the Institute for Human Services in Columbus, Ohio, will address "Cultural Intelligence in the Investigation and Treatment of Suspected Child Abuse."

Afternoon keynote speaker Dr. Richard Kaplan, medical director of the Center for Safe and Healthy Children at the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital and associate medical director for Midwest Children's Resource Center at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, will present "The Recognition of Abusive — Injuries Cutaneous Findings."

Breakout sessions will include:

  • "Investigation and Prosecution of Child Abuse and Neglect"
  • "Social Work Investigation and the Safe Return of the Child"
  • "A Medical-Legal Update on the Care of Possible Victims of Child Sexual Abuse."

The cost of the conference is $85 and includes .6 continuing education units or 6.25 nursing contact hours, 6.5 CLE/6.5 CLEf/6.5 CLEm's, program materials, refreshment break and lunch. CMEs and LEs are pending.
