Tip Sheet for the week of Aug. 11, 2008

RELEASED: Aug. 11, 2008

Story Idea
Just in time for the start of the 2008-09 school year, a new book co-authored by a UW-Eau Claire faculty member provides comprehensive strategies to help educators and parents identify, prevent and respond to instances of cyberbullying in their schools and families. "Bullying Beyond the Schoolyard: Preventing and Responding to Cyberbullying," by Dr. Justin W. Patchin, UW-Eau Claire assistant professor of criminal justice, and Dr. Sameer Hinduja, assistant professor of criminology and criminal justice at Florida Atlantic University, was released Aug. 1 by Corwin Press. The book, based on Patchin and Hinduja's original research with thousands of adolescents, provides parents, teachers, counselors and others with effective ways to respond when an individual deliberately uses technology (computers or cell phones, for example) to harass or threaten another person repeatedly over time. Patchin is available to discuss his research and the new book. He can be reached by e-mail at patchinj@uwec.edu. Those wishing to reach him by phone should call 715-836-4741, and UW-Eau Claire News Bureau staff will assist you in contacting him.
