Tip Sheet for the week of Aug. 4, 2008

RELEASED: Aug. 4, 2008

Story Idea
UW-Eau Claire will host a mental health training workshop Tuesday, Aug. 5, for approximately 80 residence hall directors from eight University of Wisconsin System institutions. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Davies Center. Incidents across the United States of campus violence involving individuals suffering from mental illness have raised expectations among the general public that university housing staff find appropriate ways to respond to students in distress, said Deborah Newman, UW-Eau Claire associate director of housing. "This is an area that can be overwhelming for hall directors, since it is not usually a direct part of their educational program," Newman said. "They want more opportunities to learn what they might face and think through how to handle it." At Tuesday's workshop, experienced residence life and counseling staff members from various UW System institutions will facilitate small-group sessions on a variety of mental health topics, and Daniel McCann, clinical social worker for the Veterans Health Administration at the Chippewa Valley VA Clinic, will present a general session on veterans' mental health issues. Newman is available to discuss the workshop and its importance for university residence life staff. She can be reached at 715-836-3674 or newmandl@uwec.edu. P.J. Kennedy, a workshop presenter and UW-Eau Claire's director of Counseling Services, also is available to discuss student mental health issues of concern to university faculty and staff. He can be reached at 715-836-5521 or pkennedy@uwec.edu.
