Musical Events
for the Week of May 5

RELEASED: April 30, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Monday, May 5. All events are free and open to the public.

Wednesday, May 7:

  • Senior Sabrina Gilchrist, Eau Claire, will present her capstone lecture and dance recital at 10 a.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The performance will begin with "Discovering Truth Through Improv: A Look into Beat Poetry and Interpretation," followed by "Building a Conversation" featuring senior Ben Lester on drums and sophomore Traci Blodgett as dancer, and "Howl: Text Through an Interpretive Community," featuring The Ben Lester Combo and four dancers. The recital will conclude with some of the dancers and musicians reflecting on the creation process and the ideas and images they used from "Howl" as they performed. For the conclusion, Gilchrist will reflect on the final performance, its effectiveness as contemporary criticism, an analysis of "Howl," and the interpretive process through unwritten texts.

Saturday, May 10:

  • Senior Brent Bergstrom, Green Bay, will present his capstone dance recital showcasing his achievements in choreography, modern, tap and jazz dance at 7:30 p.m. in Kjer Theatre. The performance, "No Day But Today" will feature ten original dances and will begin with "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," set to music of the same title by The Darkness. Following will be "Hymn A L'amore," "Love Ridden," "Out Through the In Door," and "SPF Zero." The first half of the recital will close with "Is It?" a piece Bergstrom choreographed and performed for UW-Eau Claire Dance Company's April performance of Danceworks 2008. The second half of the recital will begin with "Roadie Line Dance," followed by "Effection" and "Juliet's Lament," two pieces performed at the 2008 American College Dance Festival Association. The recital will conclude with "No Day but Today."
