Two UW-Eau Claire SWATeam Members Named Outstanding Peer Educators

RELEASED: April 24, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — Two University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Student Wellness Advocacy Team members were recognized for their work as peer health educators at the Area 4 BACCHUS Conference April 4-5.

UW-Eau Claire's SWATeam is an affiliate of the BACCHUS Network, a university and community-based network focusing on comprehensive health and safety initiatives. Its mission is to educate students about health issues in a fun and engaging way so students can make informed decisions within their daily and life activities.

Amy Verburg, River Falls, was named "Outstanding Senior Peer Educator" and will be inducted into the Peer Educators' Hall of Fame.

Verburg has been a member of the SWATeam for three years. She has served on the planning committee for Take Back the Night, which required her to work with offices such as the Women's and Gender Equity Center, Center for Awareness of Sexual Assault, College Feminists, University Police and Conferences and Reservations. She also organized the call-in TV show "Ask the Sexperts" on the campus cable station.

Verburg also is a tennis coach and swimming instructor at the Eau Claire Area YMCA, has mentored teen girls in a support group for victims of sexual assault, and is a Campus Ambassador and Admissions intern.

Senior Sara Yaron, Mosinee, was named "Outstanding Peer Educator." Yaron helped plan a rally for awareness of dating and domestic violence. She coordinated the Women's Health Series, which addressed topics pertinent to college-aged women. She also was recognized for improving the reputation of the SWATeam within Housing and Residence Life through regular e-mail contact. She has attended regional and national BACCHUS conferences, as well as the iLead conference on the UW-Eau Claire campus.
