EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire theatre department's production of "The Underpants," directed by associate professor of theatre arts Richard Nimke, will open at 7:30 p.m. May 1 in Riverside Theatre. Additional evening performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 2-3 and May 7-10. A matinee performance will be at 1:30 p.m. May 4.
"The Underpants" is an adaptation by Steve Martin of Carl Sternheim's classic satirical play. Theo Maske, a conservative civil servant, fears he will lose his job and will be disgraced after his wife Louise's bloomers fall down in public. Fortunately for Theo, the incident does not cost him his job but instead brings boarders for the extra room he plans to rent. The two male boarders, one a poet and the other a Jewish barber, are both infatuated with Louise after the incident. Oblivious to their amorous objectives, Theo splits the room between them, happy to collect rent from both.
The cast for "The Underpants" includes senior Dustin Haugle, Colfax, as Theo Maske; junior Ryan McDaniel, Oregon, as Frank Versati; sophomore Jacob Shuda, Eau Claire, as Benjamin Cohen; and junior Sheena Thompson, River Falls, as Louise Maske. Playing the King is junior Tim Jacobs, Hampton, N.H.; junior CJ Krueger, Rochester, Minn., will play Klinglehoff; and sophomore Charlene Lucht, Greenville, will be Gertrude.
The production's stage manager is junior Brittany Gusho, Milwaukee; the scenic designer is senior Peter Wojtowicz, Milwaukee. The lighting director is assistant professor of music and theatre arts Kevin Gawley. His lighting design assistant is freshman Kendra Raemisch, Madison. Mallory Prucha Rishoi is the costume designer.
Tickets, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-8932, are $10 for the general public, $8 for those 62 and older and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff, $6 for children 18 and younger, and $5 for students with a university ID.
