EAU CLAIRE — First Fridays invites senior citizens to a May 2 discussion titled "Culture Shock: The Experiences of Students Studying in a Foreign Land" with University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire faculty member Helaine Minkus. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast, and the program will follow at 9 a.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, located at the corner of Lake and Farwell streets in downtown Eau Claire.

Minkus' program on the perils of crossing cultures is based on her experiences living in Ghana and Japan and research she has conducted with international students for 20 years. She will discuss the problems of culture shock, adjustment to a foreign culture and the less well-known but often more difficult process of reentry to the home culture. She will outline the problems and provide practical advice for culture shock and reentry shock.

Dr. Minkus has been a member of the anthropology faculty at UW-Eau Claire for the past 35 years, teaching such courses as Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, Peoples of Africa, Women in Cross-Cultural Perspective and Japanese Society and Culture. She has published articles on the traditional philosophy of the Akan, a group living in Ghana; on the processes of cultural adjustment and readjustment of Japanese and American university exchange students; and on host family programs in Japan and the United States.

For the safety of the senior audience, the event will be cancelled if the Eau Claire Area School District cancels or delays classes because of hazardous weather.

First Fridays programs are presented the first Friday of each month October through May, except in January, at no cost to the senior community. People with season passes that are stamped each month will be eligible for a prize drawing at the May presentation.

The program is funded in part by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Community Outreach Program for the Arts, the Great Harvest Bread Company and Elliot Roberts.

First Fridays is coordinated by Beverly Soll and Jennifer Brockpahler of the UW-Eau Claire Activities and Programs office and is hosted by Scott and Heather Kirby of Christ Church Cathedral. The mission of First Fridays is to provide free entertainment and educational experiences for area senior citizens through shared community and university sponsorship.
