Media Memo: Earth Day

TO: News Editors and Directors

FROM: Judy Berthiaume, Director

DATE: April 22, 2008

SUBJECT: Earth Day

UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff and students are helping to organize and plan to participate in numerous activities April 26 to help the Chippewa Valley celebrate Earth Day.

Examples include:

  • The Foodlums, a UW-Eau Claire student club, will coordinate food to be available during the citywide Earth Day celebration at Phoenix Park in downtown Eau Claire. The food will feature dishes made by local restaurants, many using local foods. The event at Phoenix Park, sponsored by the Eau Claire Earth Day Celebration Committee, will run 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and feature booths and exhibits from local natural resources organizations and nonprofit organizations. There will be music by local musicians, including Jeff White, Elizabeth Christianson and Billy Krause.
  • The Alumni Association will have a table at the Phoenix Park event that includes displays by some faculty and students.
  • The UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association, with help from faculty and students, will sponsor an Eco Tour celebrating the beauty in and surrounding the campus. The Eco Tour will kick off at 9 a.m. with a nature walk through Putnam Park led by UW-Eau Claire biologist Dr. Paula Kleintjes Neff. She will talk about the ecology and natural history of the park. Nature cooperating, she'll also point out migratory birds and spring flowers along the hike. At 10:30 a.m. the group will bike to Phoenix Park to participate in citywide Earth Day events. After the Phoenix Park activities, the Eco Tour group will bike to Braun's Bay in Carson Park, where they will canoe on Half Moon Lake and learn about the area's water ecosystems and conservation efforts from Dr. Harry Jol and Dr. Douglas Faulkner, professors of geography and anthropology.
