EAU CLAIRE — "The Belle of Amherst," a one-person play starring Ginger Grace as the beloved poet Emily Dickinson, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. April 28 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Concluding this season's Artists Series, the performance will be in Schofield Auditorium.

William Luce's "The Belle of Amherst" is an entertaining and anecdotal revelation of the life and art of Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), widely regarded as one of the leading American poets of the 19th century. Only 10 of Dickinson's 1,775 lyric poems were published in her lifetime, which was largely spent secluded at home in Amherst, Mass. With a wicked sense of humor, the Dickinson of "The Belle of Amherst" tweaks Victorian pretensions, performs deadpan impressions of the people around her and mocks her own idiosyncrasies.

William Luce wrote the Broadway hit for Julie Harris, who won her fifth Tony Award in 1977 for best actress in a play. The album won a Grammy Award, and the PBS production received three Christopher Awards. Claire Bloom's performance in a Thames Television production received an Emmy Award.

Ginger Grace has performed opposite Rich Little in the tour of "The Presidents," playing all of the first ladies from Jackie Kennedy to Hillary Clinton. Off-Broadway and in regional theater she has starred in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," "Craig's Wife," "Mourning Becomes Electra," "Dancing at Lughnasa," "Angel Street," "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Faust."

A pre-event dessert discussion with Grace, hosted by Allyson Loomis of the UW-Eau Claire department of English, will be held in The Dulany of Davies Center from 6-7 p.m. Tickets for the discussion are $5 in advance or at the door.

Tickets for the Artists Series performance are $15 for the public, $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call 715-836-3727 or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

The Artists Series is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the state of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites (715-838-9989) at 3340 Mondovi Road is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series. "The Belle of Amherst" is also supported by a Cultural Arts Grant from the Chippewa Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office.
