EAU CLAIRE — The Spanish Business Association at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will bring Luis Cristo to campus to speak from 6-7 p.m. April 29 in the Presidents Room of Davies Center.

Cristo is a culture and language consultant for Chipotle Mexican Grill throughout Minnesota. Originally from Mexico City, he attended the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and has worked for Chipotle Mexican Grill since 2003. He will discuss the company and how the use of Spanish gave him an opportunity to serve the community.

"Chipotle promotes everyone who works there," said Cristo. "I teach the culture we have as a company and of the people."

As a culture and language consultant, Cristo bridges communication barriers among the company's employees. His workday varies as he travels among 45 restaurants, but he usually joins employees in their work and provides vocabulary and English lessons as they perform their tasks. Cristo also leads a daylong class to teach employees about the culture of the company.

Cristo said the company allows him to achieve his goals by helping others achieve theirs.

Cristo's advice for students seeking a career involving Spanish language skills is to remember that communication training is an ongoing process. He believes the hardest part is speaking, and he recommends habitual practice.

Cristo's presentation, to be conducted entirely in Spanish, is free and open to students, faculty and community members.

UW-Eau Claire offers the option of a business/professions emphasis with its liberal arts Spanish major. Dr. Juan Carlos Chaves, SBA adviser, said he hopes the presentation will be of interest to other students enrolled in Spanish classes, as well as those who have studied abroad in Spanish-speaking countries.

The Spanish Business Association meets monthly, inviting native speakers of Spanish from all professions to share their work experiences and how they came to hold their positions. The association serves as a bridge between the university and the larger community.

For more information, contact Chaves at 715-836-4287 or chavesjc@uwec.edu, or SBA president Chase Sova at sovaca@uwec.edu.
