UW-Eau Claire Foundation Awards Study Abroad Scholarships to 14 Students

EAU CLAIRE — Study abroad scholarships were awarded to 14 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students for travel in the summer and fall of 2008. Amounts ranged from $250 to $600. Recipients were chosen by a faculty and staff committee.

The UW-Eau Claire Foundation awards students scholarships each semester ranging from $150 to $600. Applicants must be degree-seeking UW-Eau Claire students who have been accepted into the study abroad program and demonstrate financial need.

Five students received grants for summer 2008. Alyssa Bollinger and Brittany Sutton will study in South Africa. Bollinger, Manitowoc, is an art major. Sutton, Muskego, is a religious studies major. Political science major Gregory Vanevenhoven, Wrightstown, and Spanish major DaPhorn Lee, Menasha., will go to Cuernavaca, Mexico. Donald Ekern, a kinesiology major from West Salem, will participate in the Central European Travel Seminar.

Eight scholarships were awarded for fall 2008. Loni Olstad and Nicole Muenchow will travel to Valladolid, Spain. Olstad, Westby, is a communication major. Muenchow is an undeclared major from Prior Lake, Minn. Biology major Meghan Pickard, Eau Claire, will travel to Graz, Austria. Ashley Adams, Chippewa Falls, and Phyllis McGreevy, Plymouth, Minn., will go to Lancaster, England. Adams is an elementary education major; McGreevy is undeclared. Marketing major Sarah Hagen, Apple Valley, Minn., will travel to Lismore, Australia. History major Meghann McKinnon, Janesville, will go to Harlaxton, England. Art and English major Brittany Williams, Appleton, will go to Perth, Australia.

Four other scholarships are awarded to study abroad students through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. The James Berry Summer 2008 Scholarship is awarded to students attending the Cuernavaca, Mexico, summer program of The Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey. Vanevenhoven also was awarded this scholarship.

The Frances Kirby and Family Memorial Scholarship is based on financial need. Recipients must have at least a 3.0 GPA and Wisconsin residency. Olstad and Pickard also were awarded these scholarships.

The Genevieve Hagen Fall Scholarship is typically given to a student majoring in a foreign language who plans to study in Germany or Scandinavia. English major Sammiejo Stubb, Chippewa Falls, received this $500 scholarship. She will go to Vaxjo, Sweden.

The Dolly Rounds Memorial International Scholarship is awarded to degree-seeking students who have been accepted into a study abroad program and have a GPA of at least 3.0. Olstad was awarded $300 from this scholarship fund.
