EAU CLAIRE — The department of foreign languages and the Center for International Education at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire will sponsor the second annual International Poetry Reading from 7-9 p.m. April 30 in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

The free event will be hosted by UW-Eau Claire's annual English Festival, which runs April 30-May 1. All are invited.

Dr. Audrey Fessler, assistant professor of English and women's studies, and Dr. Jeff Vahlbusch, associate professor of foreign languages, invited UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff as well as community members to share the beauty of their native or favorite languages by submitting a favorite short poem to read aloud. Audience members will receive a booklet with all poems printed in their original languages, along with English translations.

Fessler and Vahlbusch — who conceived and organized the first event last year — said that audience members will again hear and read poems in about 30 different languages. The ancient and modern languages represented during last year's event included Arabic, Akkadian, Catalan, Cambodian, Chinese, Dutch, French, Finnish, German, Ghaidlig, Scots, Ancient Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hmong, Korean, Latin, Macedonian, Malay, Middle High German, Ojibwe, Old English, Romanian, Russian, Sign, Spanish, Swedish, Ukrainian, Uzbek and Vietnamese.

"We're thrilled by the community's response again this year," Vahlbusch said of the number of entries. "It's going to be a magical evening."
