Mathematics Retreat to Feature Student Presentations and Guest Lecturer

RELEASED: April 14, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's 17th annual Mathematics Retreat will begin at 8 a.m. April 18.

Area teachers, their students and parents are invited and encouraged to attend.

From 8 a.m.-3 p.m., UW-Eau Claire mathematics students and faculty will lead 20- or 40-minute mathematics presentations. Most of the 42 presentations offered this year — on subjects such as mathematics education, actuarial science, pure mathematics and practical applications of mathematics — are appropriate for a general audience.

Regular mathematics classes do not meet during the Mathematics Retreat, and students are encouraged to attend talks of special interest to them. A complete schedule of events can be found at online.

Dr. Urmila Malvadkar, the distinguished visiting speaker from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, will give two talks during the retreat. She will speak on "Mathematical Experiments" at 1 p.m. in Room 100 of Hibbard Hall. She will demonstrate how and why scientists often turn to mathematics to model systems they are studying in areas such as conservation biology.

At 5 p.m. in Room 102 of Hibbard Hall, Malvadkar will present "How Math Can Help Save the Planet, or at Least Prevent Extinctions." She will use mathematical models to show how they can provide important insights into critical conservation issues. In this talk, she will show how to derive equations that describe population dynamics in a marine protected area and nearby habitat patches.

Malvadkar has a doctoral degree in mathematical biology from Princeton University. Her research focuses on modeling movement in ecological systems.

At 3 p.m. in Davies Theatre, the mathematics department and Math Club will host a tribute to Dr. Andrew Balas, who died last month after 24 years of teaching mathematics at UW-Eau Claire.

All events are open to the public.

For more information, contact the department of mathematics at 715-836-3301 or andersrn@uwec.edu.

The Mathematics Retreat is sponsored by the mathematics department and the UW-Eau Claire Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
