Annual Hmong Culture Fest Set for April 19
at UW-Eau Claire

portion of Hmong Culture Fest posterEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Hmong Student Association will present the 19th annual Hmong Culture Fest from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. April 19 in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

The event will help the campus and greater Eau Claire communities to experience and learn about Hmong culture, food, arts, music and dance.

Cultural workshops will be offered throughout the day. Workshops for Hmong embroidery (paj ntaub) and folk songs (kwv txhaij) will be presented concurrently at 10:30 a.m. and at 11:15 a.m. A traditional clothing workshop will follow at noon. Lunch will be served at 12:45 p.m. compliments of Long Cheng Market.

At 2 p.m., journalist and human rights activist Thua Vang from the Fact Finding Commission in California will present "Laos: The Lost Hmong."

Vang will discuss Hmong ethnic history and identity, U.S. military involvement in Laos and the unresolved 30-year conflict between the Lao PDR government and certain groups of Hmong. He will talk about how investigative journalists and videographers have uncovered stories and connected with the remaining Hmong Lao population. He also will discuss their current status in terms of politics, history, international law and international human rights.

The event is free an open to the public. If interested in lunch, please RSVP by April 16 to Christine Webster at websteck@uwec.edu.

The event is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Support for Vang's visit was provided by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs' Guest Lecturers, Artists, and Other Professionals program, the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the departments of communications and journalism, history and political science.
