19th Annual Hmong Community Fellowship
Banquet Set for April 23 at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: April 9, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — The 19th annual Hmong Community Fellowship Banquet, "New Directions: Forging and Building Bridges," will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. April 23 in the Council Fire Room at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Davies Center.

The goal of this year's event is to rebuild community relations while fostering new ones and to share the accomplishments of the HMAA, said organizers of the event. The banquet will provide community members, non-profit agencies and businesses with a chance for camaraderie and the opportunity to enrich and strengthen relationships within the community.

Past participants have noted they enjoyed listening to the stories told by Hmong Americans, meeting new people and hearing how Eau Claire has changed.

A dinner consisting of Hmong dishes will be served at 6 p.m. A speaker and play performance will follow the dinner.

The keynote speaker is Caitlin Mai Chong Lee of the UW-Eau Claire Affirmative Action Office. She will give a brief update on agency activities and speak about the new direction the agency hopes to take in the coming months.

The play to be performed, "Stir Fried Pop Culture" by May Lee Yang, has been called a clever, hilarious and thought provoking play that confronts stereotypes and identity issues experienced by Hmong Americans.

Reservations should be made by April 16 at the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association Inc. at 423 Wisconsin St. in Eau Claire. Reservations also will be taken by phone at 715-832-8420 or fax at 715-832-0612.

Sponsors of the event are the Eau Claire Hmong Mutual Assistance Association and UW-Eau Claire's Office of Multicultural Affairs.
