EAU CLAIRE — The 2008 Honoring Education Pow-Wow will be held at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday, April 19, in Zorn Arena. Doors to the event will open to the public at 11 a.m.
Grand entries will be at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and the feast will begin at 5 p.m. Head dancers for the first session will be Robert Hart and Christian Clarquist. Daniel Prescott and Netawn Kiogima will be head dancers for the second session.
Dylan Prescott will serve as master of ceremonies. Bobby Bird Sr. will serve as arena director.
Host drum is Buffalo Horse. Invited drums are Battle Point, Lac Courte Oreilles Badgers, Raining Thunder, Cumberland, Bearheart and Wind Eagle.
The fifth annual hand drum competition will take place during the day. The prizes for first, second and third place are $150, $100 and $50. Hand drums can be provided to competitors.
Other pow-wow events will include the men's traditional special competition, sponsored by Dan Prescott; the men's fancy, grass and traditional dance contests; and the female fancy, jingle and traditional dance contests. Winners are awarded a cash prize and trophy.
Admission (including the feast) is $5 for adults, $4 for those with a Blugold ID and free for children under age 5 and seniors over age 55.
The Honoring Education Pow-Wow is sponsored by UW-Eau Claire's Native American Student Association, Office of Multicultural Affairs, American Indian studies program, Housing and Residence Life, and University Activities Commission, as well as the Chippewa Valley Technical College Diversity Student Organization.
