UW-Eau Claire to Screen 'Mean Creek' April 10-13

RELEASED: April 2, 2008

poster for Mean CreekEAU CLAIRE — "Mean Creek" (U.S. 2004), a story of vengeance, friendship and forgiveness, will screen April 10-13 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. "A surprisingly complex story of young teenagers trying to do the right thing" (Roger Ebert), the film will be presented at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Schofield Auditorium.

Rory Culkin stars as Sam, a small middle-school boy who is bullied and beaten at recess by the overweight, older-than-his-classmates George (Josh Peck). Sam's teenage brother Rocky (Trevor Morgan) and his friends devise a practical joke that will teach the bully a lesson he will never forget. They invite George along on a boating expedition and plan to humiliate him but their prank goes horribly wrong.

"Written and directed by Jacob Aaron Estes in an assured feature debut and performed by an expert young cast, 'Mean Creek' combines sensitivity and teenage themes in a way that is all but unheard of these days," wrote Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan. "The plot, with echoes of 'Deliverance' and Tim Hunter's 'River's Edge,' has familiar elements, but the film's keen sense of interpersonal dynamics, its emphasis on non-exploitative honesty and its concern with larger issues set it on firm ground of its own. .... [The film's] greatest asset is its sense of truth. It doesn't pander to or indulge its characters like the teen films we're used to. It looks at them straight ahead and with respect. It's something you wish Hollywood, and even parents, did more often."

The 90-minute film is rated R for language and teen drug and alcohol use.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby and will be sold at the door.

The screenings are sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate.
