EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugold Marching Band, America's largest NCAA Division III marching band, will give a special stage performance at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in UW-Eau Claire's Zorn Arena.

This special performance will include a celebration of "Blugold Traditions" as well as the band's exciting new international show, "What's Hot," a collection of the hottest current music from around the world.

The Blugold Marching Band, directed by associate professor of music Dr. Randal Dickerson, is presenting this concert as a prelude to their special invitation to perform for Pope Benedict XVI and an estimated crowd of 100,000 people during the Pope's 2008 New Year's Day blessing in St. Peter's Square in Rome.

Dickerson, who joined the UW-Eau Claire faculty in 2000 when the marching band was a relatively small band of about 60 students, has devoted time and energy to growing and strengthening the band over the past seven years, increasing the size of the color guard and the horn line and giving the band a bigger sound with more of what Dickerson calls "move and groove." In 2004 the band's hard work was rewarded by an invitation to play at a Green Bay Packers' game at Lambeau Field. The band now numbers 202 students.

"This will be the first time we have presented a stage show in Zorn, and we are excited to play in a new venue," Dickerson said. "It gives us a chance to present a much longer and more detailed show than we are able to do at half-time of the Blugold games. We're not only celebrating our Blugold traditions, we'll also be letting the audience see a side of the Blugold Marching Band they have never seen before, and I think the audience will enjoy that."

Tickets are $5 and are available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727, or at the door.
