UW-Eau Claire to Hold Event About Organ Donation and Transplants

RELEASED: Sept. 26, 2007

EAU CLAIRE — An event titled "Raising Awareness About Organ Donation and Transplant: The Gift of Life!" will be held Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

OPO logoFrom 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. representatives from the University of Wisconsin Organ Procurement Organization in Madison will be on the Campus Mall and in Davies Center providing valuable information regarding the donation and transplant of human organs.

Then from 4:30 to 6 p.m., there will be a general presentation in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. Among the issues being covered will be the fact that in the United States 18 people die each day waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. Additional information will be presented on the following:

  • Facts and myths concerning donation
  • Organs that can be transplanted
  • What's being done to reduce the shortage
  • How to become an organ donor
  • What citizens can do to help

Following the general presentation, two people whose lives have been touched by the gift of life will tell their stories. Mary Nachreiner is a donor mom whose story inspired the Kelly Nachreiner law signed by Tommy Thompson in 2000, which requires that all driver education classes talk about organ donation. Trey Schwab is a former assistant basketball coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves and the University of Marquette. He received a lung transplant in 2004 after two years on the waiting list.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will wrap up with questions and answers, followed by a brief reception.

The UW-Eau Claire economics department, health care administration program and College of Nursing and Health Sciences are sponsoring this event.
