RELEASED: Sept. 18, 2007
EAU CLAIRE — An instrument petting zoo — a hands-on activity that introduces children to musical instruments — will be presented Saturday, Sept. 29, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the basement of Grace Lutheran Church (202 W. Grand Avenue, Eau Claire). The program will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Artists Series, to highlight the Oct. 11 concert by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and will also celebrate community orchestras: the Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra, the Chippewa Valley Symphony Orchestra, and the University Symphony Orchestra.
When they are able to see, touch, hear and play orchestra instruments, children learn that they are an integral part of the creation of musical sounds and become familiar with how sound is produced. The activity sparks a child's creativity and opens doors to a musical world and its many benefits.
Promising "instruments to try, hands-on activities, and cookies," the instrument petting zoo also will provide an opportunity to recognize the myriad of orchestral experiences available throughout the Chippewa Valley. Each participating organization will have materials available to promote upcoming events:
The instrument petting zoo is free and open to the public. More information is available from UW-Eau Claire's Activities and Programs office, 715-836-2787, or online.
