UW-Eau Claire Kinesiology Department Holds
Relay to Benefit Scholarship

RELEASED: Oct. 31, 2007

Jason Schluter

EAU CLAIRE — The first "Racin' for Jason" relay event is slated for Nov. 17 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Relay team members will run continuously from 7:05 a.m. to 4:36 p.m. around UW-Eau Claire's track and around the campus.

The kinesiology department organized the all-day event to raise money for the Jason Schluter Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship was established through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation in memory of Jason Schluter, a 23-year-old senior kinesiology major who died March 20 from injuries sustained in a traffic accident in Georgia.

"I wanted to do something to honor Jason," said event organizer Dr. Lance Dalleck, an assistant professor of kinesiology who was Schluter's academic adviser. "He was a special student. He had wonderful people skills and a very big heart, which perhaps explains why he hoped to pursue a career in cardiac rehabilitation."

The scholarship will be awarded for the first time during the 2007-08 spring semester.

"The scholarship was established to support kinesiology students who have a zest for life and exhibit the outstanding qualities that made Jason a valued student in our program," Dalleck said. "Now with the relay, we'd like to raise $10,000 to endow the scholarship in perpetuity."

Individuals on each relay team will be asked to solicit contributions for the amount of distance they will cover during the relay, Dalleck said.

Dalleck is seeking volunteers to help with the event, as well as sponsors to help with food and beverages, donations and prizes.

For details about participating in the relay or helping to support the event, contact Dalleck at 715-836-3774 or dalleclc@uwec.edu.
