EAU CLAIRE — Students will learn the essentials about the law in cyberspace, what their rights are, how the laws operate and what potential liabilities await them at a presentation Monday, Nov. 5, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Student advocate and attorney C.L. Lindsay will speak on "Trouble Online: Campus Computing and the Law" at 7:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.

The advent of social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook have put both universities and their students in a precarious and largely undefined space. Students are commonly accused of online harassment, electronic stalking, copyright infringement and software piracy. Lindsay's program teaches students how to protect themselves both legally and personally when they log on. Interactive, innovative and entertaining, the multimedia presentation takes the mystery out of legalese and explains student rights in a clear, cogent and often outright funny way.

The author of "The College Student's Guide to the Law" (2005), C.L. Lindsay is a recognized expert in the field of student rights and educational law. He left his practice in 1998 to found the Coalition for Student and Academic Rights (CO-STAR), a national nonprofit organization that offers free legal advice to students and educators. The group receives more than 10,000 legal requests each year, the overwhelming majority of them involving incriminating photographs, illegal downloading and plagiarizing.

Lindsay has been interviewed on national television ("The Sally Jesse Raphael Show") and radio (NPR), and has been featured in numerous publications, including U.S. News & World Report, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post and Newsday.

The program is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate.
