EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Spanish Business Association will bring alumnus Michael McElwee to campus to speak about his experiences as a social worker at the Milwaukee Veterans Administration Medical Center. McElwee will speak from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the Presidents Room of Davies Center. The presentation will be conducted entirely in Spanish.

With a major in social work and minor in Spanish, McElwee said it was his career goal to use Spanish. Prior to working at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center, McElwee worked for a community-based, long-term care agency as a case manager.

"Approximately one-third of the clients on my caseload spoke Spanish," said McElwee. "Most were from Puerto Rico, but there were a few from Texas and Mexico. I think the best thing Spanish students can do is to pursue opportunities to practice Spanish in 'real world' settings where speaking English is not always an option."

McElwee's presentation is free and open to students, faculty and community members. Refreshments will be served.

UW-Eau Claire offers the option of a business/professions emphasis with its liberal arts Spanish major, but Dr. Juan Carlos Chaves, SBA adviser, said he hopes the presentation also will be of interest to many of the other students enrolled in Spanish classes at UW-Eau Claire, as well as those who have studied abroad in Spanish-speaking countries.

The Spanish Business Association meets monthly, inviting native speakers of Spanish from all professions to come and share their work experiences and how they came to hold their present positions. The main purpose of the association is to serve as a bridge between the university and the larger community.
