SUBJECT: Ceremony to honor memory of late math professor
A short ceremony to dedicate a living memorial to Eberth Alarcón, a UW-Eau Claire associate professor of mathematics who died in September 2006, will begin a few minutes before noon Oct. 26 outside Zorn Arena on lower campus.
Members of the university's Noonhour Basketball Association collected money to buy trees to create a living memorial to honor Eberth. The trees were planted outside the main entrance to Zorn Arena.
Members of the Noonhour Basketball Association have gathered at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in Zorn Arena since 1972. The group includes faculty from 15 departments, administrators, staff, retired faculty and staff, Eau Claire area community members and teachers from the Chippewa Valley Technical College.
Eberth Alarcón, who died at age 40 after a battle against acute leukemia, played with the basketball group for many years.
During Friday's ceremony, those involved in the Noonhour Basketball Association will change into their basketball gear and present a basketball to Eberth's widow, Asha Sen, associate professor of English. The group will then go into Zorn Arena to play basketball.
