Rally to End Domestic and Dating Violence
to Be Held at UW-Eau Claire Oct. 24

RELEASED: Oct. 19, 2007

EAU CLAIRE — The Women's and Gender Equity Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will sponsor a Rally to End Domestic and Dating Violence at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, on the Central Campus Mall.

The event will include speakers, an open microphone and information on campus and community resources.

"Statistics show that somewhere in America a woman is battered, usually by her intimate partner, every 15 seconds, and that one in four women will be abused in their lifetime," says Jeni Haddad from the WAGE Center. "Recognizing this is a simple step that people can take to create awareness and generate activism. By acknowledging that abuse is a very pertinent and pervasive issue, we can begin to take the steps to eradicate domestic and dating violence."

Speakers include Stephanie Erickson, a recent graduate of UW-Eau Claire's social work program; Susan Harless, an attorney and advocate for victims of domestic violence; Kirby Harless, an attorney and residence hall director; and Laurel Kiefer, a UW-Eau Claire women's studies lecturer.

The event is free and open to all. In case of inclement weather, the rally will be held in the Alumni Room of Davies Center.

Other sponsors of the Rally to End Domestic and Dating Violence are UW-Eau Claire's SWATeam, Bolton Refuge House, the Center for Awareness of Sexual Assault, and UW-Eau Claire Counseling Services.
