Tip Sheet for the week of Homecoming 2007

Homecoming Week, one of UW-Eau Claire's largest annual events, will run Sept. 30-Oct. 7. The following are possible story/photo ideas that relate to the celebration, which brings thousands of alumni back to campus.

Story Idea
UW-Eau Claire's nationally recognized chemistry department is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. In honor of the anniversary, about 70 chemistry alumni, current students, faculty and emeriti faculty will gather for a celebration beginning at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at Stella Blues.
Alumni are coming from as far away as New York City and California to join the festivities. Faculty and students also will host an open house for alumni and emeriti faculty from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Oct. 6 in the chemistry department (Phillips Science Hall). Demonstrations, labs, tours and other activities are planned. Students will participate in a variety of games Homecoming week. Games on upper campus will begin at 4 p.m. Oct. 3 behind Governors Hall. Games include a three-legged sack race, tug-of-war, water balloon toss and toilet paper roll. Lower campus games — including the human knot, human pyramid and tricycle race — will begin at 4 p.m. Oct. 4 on the Central Campus Mall.

A snake dance will begin at 6:45 p.m. Oct. 3.
Students will meet at the base of the hill. A Yell-Like-Hell competition and pep rally will follow the snake dance at 7 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

The student talent show "Varsity Night Live!" will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 in Zorn Arena. The variety show will feature students and comedian Rob Paravonian. The coronation of Homecoming royalty will follow the show.

The Nursing Alumni Homecoming Walk will begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 6 by the Nursing Building on lower campus.

The Homecoming parade will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 6 at Grand and First avenues, proceed to Water Street and end at Second Avenue. The Blugold Marching Band, conducted by associate professor of music Randy Dickerson, will lead the parade. LaNette Flunker, senior lecturer of management and marketing and winner of the 2007 Excellence in Teaching Award, will be grand marshal.

The traditional alumni pre-game Homecoming festival, "Blugold Fever Fest," will begin immediately following the parade at Carson Park. The Marching Band will perform during that event.

The Blugolds will play the UW-La Crosse Eagles at the Homecoming football game 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Carson Park. Half-time entertainment will be provided by the Blugold Marching Band.

The Fifth Quarter, a free post-game party, will follow the game. The Blugold Marching Band will lead fans to the tent below the stadium for the party. Music will be provided by Home-Grown Tomatoes, a band whose members include several Blugold alumni.

Homecoming competitions will end with the annual Adopt-a-Block neighborhood clean up on Sunday afternoon. Student teams will spread out over the Historic Randall Park Neighborhood to pick up trash left from the weekend's festivities. Students will meet at 1 p.m. in the university's Water Street parking lot.

The Alumni Soccer game will begin at noon Oct. 7 at the Varsity Field (Bollinger Fields).
