for the Week of Nov. 26

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Monday, Nov. 26. All events are free and open to the public.

Wednesday, Nov. 28:

  • The Noon-time Corner Horners horn ensemble will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall. Under the direction of Verle Ormsby Jr., senior lecturer of music, the student ensemble will open the concert with "America the Beautiful" by Samuel A. Ward. Next will be a performance of "Sextet for Horns" by Gregory Kerkorian. The ensemble also will perform selections by G.F. Handel, Johann Pachelbel, William Boyce, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giuseppe Verdi, Felix Mendelssohn and Johann Strauss. The concert will end with Lowell Shaw's "Frippery #8, Barbershop Quartet" and "Frippery #4, Spooky March."

Thursday, Nov. 29:

  • Jazz Ensemble IV and Jazz Ensemble V, directed by Bob Baca, professor of music, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall. Jazz V will open the concert with "G'on an' Git It Y'all" by Frank Foster. Next will be Count Basie's "Doin' Basie's Thing," followed by Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight." Following will be Thad Jones' "Big Dipper" and "A Few Good Men" by Gordon Goodwin. Jazz Ensemble V will close with "Shiny Stockings" by Frank Foster. Student conductors are senior Josh Becker, Apple Valley, Minn., and senior Jim Geddes, Fond du Lac.
  • Jazz IV will take the stage for the second half of the concert, opening with "Hard Hearted Hannah," arranged by Milton Ager, followed by Thad Jones' "Fingers" and "Vine Street Rumble" by Benny Carter. Next will be Dominic Spera's arrangement of "Marie." The concert will close with "Oclupaca" and "I Let a Song" by the legendary Duke Ellington. Student directors for Jazz IV are seniors Keith Karns, North Pole Alaska, and Adam Braatz, Sun Prairie. The Jazz IV and V Ensemble performances will feature a number of student solos highlighting brass, woodwind, piano and guitar.
