RELEASED: Nov. 7, 2007

poster for Chasing AmyEAU CLAIRE — "Chasing Amy" (1997) will screen Nov. 15-18 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Written and directed by Kevin Smith, the romantic comedy will be presented Thursday through Sunday at 6 and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

Lifelong best friends Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck) and Banky Edwards (Jason Lee) are enjoying success as creators of a cult-hit comic book. When they meet fellow comic-book artist Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams) at a convention, Holden falls for her immediately. Although her romantic interests lie elsewhere, Alyssa becomes close friends with Holden. As the relationship evolves and struggles to define itself, Banky grows more and more frustrated at the notion of losing his best friend to emotional adulthood.

"Still showing his touch for garrulous, hair-splitting conversation, Smith engages his characters in a bright, spirited demonstration of just how difficult modern love can be," wrote reviewer Janet Maslin in The New York Times. "Total candor, shifting sexual orientations and an atmosphere of teasing, freewheeling argument make 'Chasing Amy' a spiky comedy with engaging honesty at its core. ... It thrives on Smith's dry, deadpan direction."

Boxoffice magazine called the film "sensitive, funny and insightful ... One of the most carefully rendered portraits of gender relations in recent years."

The 113-minute film is rated R.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the Service Center, 715-836-3727, in Davies Center's east lobby and will be sold at the door.

The film is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate.
