EAU CLAIRE — Singer-songwriter Brenda Weiler will play three free concerts at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Nov. 9-10. Her shows begin Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., and Saturday at 8 p.m. in The Cabin, the Davies Center coffeehouse.

Coming from a family of eight children, each of whom possessed some type of musical talent, and a father with a doctorate in music, Weiler quickly learned the extent to which music could influence someone's life. Her original plan was to put off college for a year while she explored her investment in music. It was during this time that Weiler started performing in her hometown of Fargo, N.D., and also when she released her first full-length album, "Trickle Down." After that successful first year, Weiler decided to put off college indefinitely and pursue music full time, eventually releasing four more albums and touring nationally. She has brought home numerous awards, most notably the Minnesota Award for Best Singer/Songwriter and Best Female Vocalist.

Weiler released her most recent album, "End the Rain," in September. The Onion calls it "a remarkably and sometimes startlingly intimate album, recorded live, without overdubs, and the instrumentation is as stripped down as you can get... It's exactly the right approach for the deeply personal topic at the heart of the album, the 2005 suicide of Weiler's sister Jennifer and the turbulent emotions she went through in its wake. 'End the Rain' is heartbreakingly beautiful, and something like a masterpiece."

Cabin performances are free and open to all ages. Soft drinks, domestic and imported beer, specialty coffee drinks and tea are sold at all evening programs. Proof of age is required for alcohol purchases. For a complete schedule, contact the Activities and Programs office, 715-836-4833, or visit the Cabin Web site.
