University Recreation Offering Summer
Wellness Classes to Community Members

RELEASED: May 25, 2007

wellness imageEAU CLAIRE — University Recreation and Sports Facilities at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will offer several wellness classes this summer that are open to community members, including "Restorative Yoga," "Pilates" and "Belly Dancing."

"Restorative Yoga" will look at practical techniques for reducing stress and rejuvenating the body, mind and spirit. This is the gentlest form of yoga and will benefit those already in a state of physical or mental imbalance as well as prevent illness and injury in people who are healthy. Traditional yoga poses will be modified using props that will allow for passive opening of centers in the body that hold tension and stress. Participants also will practice unleashing the healing power of conscious, deep breathing a wonderful way to honor the gift of body and breath and to optimize their proper functioning during finals.

Patricia Wickman, a Yoga Alliance certified instructor, will teach the class, which will meet 5-6 p.m. Mondays, June 11-July 2, in Room 105, the McPhee Dance Studio on UW-Eau Claire's upper campus. The fee for the class is $25 for students, faculty and staff and $40 for community members. Participants should wear comfortable clothing. Equipment will be provided.

"Pilates" is a series of movements done from a sitting, reclining, kneeling, or standing position, designed to increase strength and flexibility, release tension and relieve chronic neck and back pain. It combines elements of eastern and western disciplines, including yoga, Tai Chi, and ancient Greek and Roman exercise protocols, as well as the repatterning of movements and proper breathing techniques. The Pilates method is used in physical rehabilitation and is popular with athletes and performance artists, as well as those seeking to improve body conditioning.

Penny Karcz, STOTT certified Pilates instructor, will lead the "Pilates" classes, which will meet Tuesday and Thursdays, June 12-Aug. 2, 6:30-7:15 a.m., in Room 105, the McPhee Dance Studio. The fees for this session are $76.50 for UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff and $120.00 for community members.

"Belly Dancing" will be an introductory course in American tribal belly dance; no previous dance experience is required. Each dancer is encouraged to abandon her worries and hesitations at the door and prepare to experience a six week session of celebrating her own body through movement and discovering the power and beauty that dancing ignites within all women. Students may be exposed to Middle Eastern, Indian, North-African, American and Eastern European styles of tribal and solo dance. Participants should wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement.

Sheri Baemmert of Yoga Alliance will be the instructor for the course, with all sessions meeting in Room 105, the Dance Studio in McPhee Physical Education Center. Sessions I and II, both level 1 courses, will meet Tuesdays, June 12-July 24, with Session 1 meeting 5-6 p.m. and Session II meeting 6:15-7:15 p.m. The fees for each session of "Belly Dancing" are $26 for UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff and $45 for community members.

Participants may register by sending checks payable to UW-Eau Claire to Vicki Funne Reed, Hilltop Center, 105 Garfield Avenue, Eau Claire, WI 54702.
