Twenty-seven UW-Eau Claire CJ Majors
Honored with Scholarships at Annual Reception

EAU CLAIRE — Twenty-seven University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students were awarded communication or journalism scholarships at the Communication and Journalism Student Excellence Recognition Reception held Friday, May 11, in Davies Center.

Nicholas Halter, St. Paul, Minn., received the Ann Devroy Fellowship, which includes a $1,400 scholarship, residency at The Washington Post and a summer internship at a Wisconsin newspaper. Halter also received an Arthur L. Murray Memorial Journalism Award of $900 and a Strategic Communications Scholarship in Print Journalism of $500.

Nicole Strittmater, Sheboygan Falls, also received a $900 Arthur L. Murray Memorial Journalism Award.

Audrey Mohr, New Ulm, Minn., received a $1,200 Donald L. and Geraldine T. Wolfarth Scholarship.

Jessica Hoel, Eden Prairie, Minn., received a $1,000 Sally A. Webb Organizational Communication Tuition Scholarship.

Zachary Gnas, Hartland, was awarded $1,000 and an internship through the Henry Lippold Fellowship. It will include a three-week mentoring and shadowing experience at a television station to be announced at a later date.

ShariLynn Lau and Hilary Rasmussen, both of Eau Claire, each received $900 William S. Cody Hall Scholarships. Rasmussen also received an $800 Donald L. and Geraldine T. Wolfarth Scholarship and a $750 Dr. Allen Zimmerman Scholarship.

Krystal Strickland, Anoka, Minn., also received a $750 Dr. Allen Zimmerman Scholarship.

Emily Hartwig, Baraboo, and Paul Huset, Rice Lake, each received $600 Lee and Esther Sanford Hench Memorial Scholarships.

Nathaniel Shuda, Wisconsin Rapids, received a $600 William Randolph Hearst Journalism Scholarship and, for the second time, a $300 Dave Gordon Reporting Scholarship for Spectator Excellence.

Amanda Ehlers, North Prairie, received a $500 Sally A. Webb Tuition Scholarship for Study Abroad.

Claudia Lozano Aquirre, an international student from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, was awarded a $500 Sally A. Webb International Student Tuition Scholarship.

Fiona Charlton, Eau Claire, received a $500 Sally A. Webb Diversity Tuition Scholarship.

Tessa Johnsen, Cannon Falls, Minn., was awarded a $500 Catherine and Greg Leaf Public Relations Scholarship.

Brian Reisinger, Spring Green, received a $500 Marshall B. Atkinson Journalism Scholarship, which is funded and awarded by the Eau Claire Press Company, and a $200 Cindy Schott Humanitarian Award. Reisinger was also recognized for winning first place in the Second Annual UW System Liberal Arts Essay Competition. Reisinger won a $1,000 scholarship in the UW-Eau Claire competition and was then nominated for the system level competition, which he also won for his essay "My Liberal Education: Repairing the Foundation of Journalism". The UW system award included a $2,000 scholarship.

Maja Petersen, Shorewood, received a $500 Chippewa Valley Newspaper Les Polk Scholarship for Spectator Excellence.

Janie Boschma, Colby, was awarded a $400 James E. Fields Journalism Scholarship, a $300 Bill Haupt Scholarship for Spectator Excellence in business/management or editorial areas, and a $250 Conner Spectator Excellence and Promise Award

Yi Woon Ng, an international student from Malaysia, was awarded a $350 Outstanding Journalism Recognition Scholarship.

Liza Huber, Chanhassen, Minn., and Kristine Olson, Minnetonka, Minn., each received $300 Leslie D. Polk Scholarships. Huber also received a $100 Robert Smith Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Graphics.

Sara Norgon, Roseville, Minn., received a $250 Will Pautz Scholarship for Spectator Excellence in Photography/Graphic Design.

Ryan Dostaleck, McFarland, was awarded a $250 Henry Lippold Freelance Writing Scholarship for Spectator Excellence.

Lindsay Green, Maple Grove, Minn., received the Wallace Weil Scholarship for Spectator Excellence in Advertising.

Amanda Kroger, Shoreview, Minn., received a $100 Excellence in Communication Award.

Kate Iannone, Eau Claire, was awarded a $100 Joseph Giordano Memorial Scholarship.

Rachel Dederich, Menomonee Falls, was awarded a $100 Kevin J. Schieffer Scholarship for the second year in a row.

Also recognized at the reception were a number of other outstanding students.

Evan Perrault, Colgate/Rhinelander, was honored as the Fall 2006 Society of Professional Journalists Outstanding Graduate. He graduated in December 2006. Heidi Bohl, Chippewa Falls, was recognized as the Spring 2007 SPJ Outstanding Graduate.

Rebecca Cheever, Ashland/Eau Claire, was honored as the Fall 2006 Kappa Tau Alpha Top Scholar. She graduated in December 2006. Paul Huset, Rice Lake, and Kelly Manske, Shakopee, Minn., were recognized as KTA spring initiates. KTA is a national journalism honor society.

Forty-seven students were also recognized for excellence in leadership and service to the department's student organizations, and 28 students were recognized for excellence in research for participating in the 2007 Student Research Day, collaborating with assistant professor Martha Fay.
