UW-Eau Claire CE to Offer
Seminar on Cyberbullying

EAU CLAIRE — Experts on cyberbullying will lead two seminars in August about preventing and responding to online aggression among adolescents.

The seminars, titled "Bullies Beyond the Schoolyard: Identifying, Preventing and Responding to Cyberbullying," are slated for Aug. 13 at UW-Baraboo/Sauk County and Aug. 14 at UW-Barron County in Rice Lake.

The seminars are designed for school administrators, counselors, social workers psychologists and other youth-serving adults interested in issues relating to cyberbullying.

Dr. Justin Patchin, an assistant professor of criminal justice at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Dr. Sameer Hinduja, an assistant professor in the department of criminology and criminal justice at Florida Atlantic University, will lead the sessions.

Patchin and Hinduja have written articles and given presentations across the country on the nature and extent of cyberbullying. They've collected data on more than 6,000 youth about their experiences with cyberbullying. They've also trained numerous school administrators on preventing and addressing the school-based consequences of online victimization.

Topics to be covered in the August seminars include an overview of online environments popular among adolescents; identifying forms of cyberbullying; the potential emotional, psychological and behavior consequences of cyberbullying; how to respond to cyberbullying incidents; legal issues; and recognizing the extent to which school personnel can get involved in incidents that occur off campus.

The seminar fee is $119 per person and includes instruction, CEUs, handouts, lunch and refreshments.
