UW-Eau Claire Students Organize Middle School
Students to Serve as Leaders for Elementary Students

RELEASED: May 14, 2007

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire after school program "Collaborative Leaders Invested in Mind & Body," otherwise known as CLIMB, is holding "Mind & Muscles" from 1:30 to 2:50 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at Altoona Elementary School.

CLIMB was started by students from the Center for Collaborative Leadership at UW-Eau Claire — sophomore Beth Fugina, Andover, Minn., and senior Dani Strama, Medford. The program's purpose is to help middle school students at Altoona Middle School develop their collaborative leadership abilities.

For the past semester, the middle school students involved in CLIMB have been working on organizing the Mind & Muscles event. After a large group meeting, the elementary students will be broken into groups with middle school leaders and travel around to stations that test their intellectual and physical abilities.

The purpose of the event is to help the 108 fourth-grade students at Altoona Elementary transition into middle school through a series of academic and physical challenges.

A group of 64 middle school volunteers will be demonstrating their leadership abilities at the event by serving as mentors to the fourth grade groups and answering any questions they have about middle school.

For more information about "Mind & Muscles," contact Fugina at 763-245-0832 or fuginabm@uwec.edu.
