EAU CLAIRE — Lori Scardino, a senior chemistry and biology major at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, has been awarded a Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship and Award of Excellence for the 2007-08 academic year.

The Fellowship will enable her to pursue a Ph.D. in cellular and molecular pathology at UW-Madison.

Scardino, an accomplished undergraduate researcher with chemistry professor Scott Hartsel and a single mother of two from Eau Claire, is among 100 students nationwide to receive the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society Fellowship and Award of Excellence.

The awards are based on undergraduate academic performance, leadership and service on the campus and community, evidence of graduate potential, and evaluation reports from three individuals who can attest to the student's performance, citizenship and character.

Scardino has received numerous scholarships through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation and many campus honors during her undergraduate career. Earlier this year she was named to the 2007 All-USA College Academic First Team by the newspaper USA Today. The Golden Key International Honor Society also selected her as Regional Student Leader of the Year.

Her career goal is to teach at a public university, much like UW-Eau Claire.
