EAU CLAIRE — Carole Halberg, president of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Foundation and special assistant to the chancellor, has accepted a position at a hospital in Madison.

Halberg will begin her duties as executive director of the St. Mary's Foundation at St. Mary's Hospital later this summer.

"My heart has been at UW-Eau Claire, but the time feels right to try something new," Halberg said. "St. Mary's has offered me an exciting opportunity to help its Foundation grow and flourish. I'm looking forward to the new challenge and greatly appreciate the wonderful opportunity given to me by the hospital's leadership team."

"We are delighted that Carole has accepted our invitation to join our leadership team," said Dr. Frank Byrne, president of St. Mary's Hospital. "The energy, enthusiasm and passion she brings to this important role will help us build on our culture of philanthropy. More importantly, her leadership will allow us to continue and expand our mission of service, strengthen our connections to our community, and honor and celebrate the relationships of St. Mary's with those who have supported St. Mary's and served here since our founding in 1912."

As president of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, Halberg initiated and led the university's Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence fundraising campaign. The campaign's goal of $35 million was extended to $50 million after the initial target was reached two years before the campaign was slated to end.

The Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence campaign, which will end in December, exceeded its $50 million goal earlier this spring.

"It's been a pleasure to do work that I enjoy at a place I love," said Halberg, who received the UW System's 2005 Academic Staff Regents Award for Excellence. "I've always taken great joy in knowing that what I do as a fundraiser has made a difference in the lives of our students, faculty and other people in this region."

Halberg's knowledge of and commitment to UW-Eau Claire will be missed greatly, said Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich.

"The incredible success of the 'Promise of Excellence' campaign is a reflection of Carole's exceptional leadership skills," Levin-Stankevich said. "Her passion for her work and for this university was critical to the success of our campaign. Her work here has made a real difference to our entire campus community."

Halberg, who graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1972, came to UW-Eau Claire in 1981 as the interim director of Alumni Relations. From 1981-2000, she served in numerous advancement positions at the university. In 2000, she was named president of the Foundation and special assistant to the chancellor. In those capacities, she has supervised alumni relations, development and university communications.
