EAU CLAIRE — Goran and Dejan Kralj, an acoustic duo of the Milwaukee-based pop-rock band The Gufs, will headline a concert at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday, May 11. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

After 18 years together and with all of the original members still in tow, The Gufs have established their legacy in the pantheon of Milwaukee rock bands by making simple and honest music that has withstood the test of time and built a significant group of dedicated and loyal fans.

Formed in 1988, The Gufs released a string of popular CDs throughout the 1990s. In 1995, amidst constant touring and a growing fan base, the band signed a major label recording contract with Atlantic Records. In 1996 its self-titled major-label debut rose to national prominence behind the hit singles "Smile" and "Crash (Into Me)," and the band quickly created a foothold on the promising modern rock scene.

After two years of successful touring and solid album sales, The Gufs recorded their second and final album for Atlantic Records. "Holiday from You," (1999) was highlighted with a dramatic combination of music, including the radio-friendly songs "Last Goodbye" and "Give Back Yourself," featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty.

Despite the critical success of the record, The Gufs left Atlantic Records believing that the album was not being properly marketed. After entertaining a series of uninspiring major-label offers resulting in even greater disillusionment with the industry, the band decided to take an indefinite hiatus from their music and, more importantly, the business.

After a seven-year hiatus, The Gufs released their seventh studio recording, "A Beautiful Disaster," in October 2006, and again began to tour across the country.

Appearing as special guest at the concert will be Chicago-based artist Julie Moffitt. Currently touring in support of her popular collection of songs, "The Stolen EP," Moffitt is gaining fans and radio play across the country. In January her first video on YouTube live footage of a 2006 Chicago show jumped into the ranking immediately, placing her in the top subscribed lists in less than a week. Moffitt will be make her debut appearance at Milwaukee's Summerfest this July and plans to release a new album in the fall.

Opening the show will be Shane Leonard and Jack O'Connor, winners of the University Activities Commission's second annual Winter Carnival Singer/Songwriter Slam.

Tickets are $6 ($4 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center in Davies Center's east lobby and will be sold at the door. The show is open to all ages. Proof of age will be required for alcohol purchases.

Patrons may also charge tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call 715-836-3727 or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.
